The university said scholars are not required to apply for this extension period
GUWAHATI: In a relief to MPhil and PhD students pursuing research work under Gauhati University (GU), the leading state university has granted an extension of six more months to them to submit their theses due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier in May, GU had extended the final date of submission of dissertation and theses by six months from the date of expiry of the regular prescribed period. So, students have got an overall extension of one year.
A notification issued by the university authorities on Monday said the extension of six more months have been approved by the vice-chancellor, taking the total extension period for the researchers to one year.
“This is for the information of all concerned that the MPhil/PhD students, whose maximum period for submission of dissertation/thesis prescribed under the Regulations of Gauhati University is expired/expiring during the Corona pandemic period, is allowed to submit their dissertation/thesis, including completion of final registration, pre-submission seminar and other pending formalities, within 6 (six) months from the date of expiry of the prescribed last date,” read the notification issued by the GU academic registrar on Monday.
It clarified that thus, the total extension period due to present pandemic situation is increased to one year, subject to realization of monthly fees for the required extension period. The notification said scholars need not require to apply for this extension period.
The recent directive of GU, which was taken based on a decision by the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding six months extension of theses and dissertation submission, was welcomed by All Assam Unemployed NET/SLET/M.PHIL./PH.D Holders’ Association, Assam.
“All of us know that due to the Covid-19 situation, all educational institutions across the country have been closed. So, in this critical juncture, many research scholars were not able to continue their research work, including field study. So, the recent decision of UGC and the subsequent notification regarding extension of further six months for submission of theses/dissertation will definitely reduce their mental pressure and depression,” said Ahinur Islam, the joint secretary of All Assam Unemployed NET/SLET/MPhil/PhD Holders’ Association.
