Deutsche Telekom plans to expand use of RAN technology, to add 2 mln fibre connections yearly

Tuesday 8 December 2020 | 11:13 CET | News
Deutsche Telekom said it will continue to rely on Radio Access Network (RAN) technology and will start to establish a so-called O-RAN-Town in Neubrandenburg, in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in 2021. It will cooperate with partners such as Dell, Fujitsu, NEC, Nokiaand Mavenir to establish up to 25 O-RAN-compatible sites in active network operation with 4G/5G technology.

Telekom also plans to add 2 million fibre-optic connections per year from 2021. Its goal is to ensure that all households in Germany have direct access to the fibre network by 2030. The company has already expanded fibre to another 600,000 households this year, up from 270,000 in the prior year. So far, Telekom has laid 575,000 km of fibre-optics, mostly in new developments, connecting 170,000 homes. By 2023, another 3,000 business parks will be connected to the fibre-optic network. Deutsche Telekom can already provide 17,000 schools with connections of up to 250 Mbps.

The company also plans to continue expanding the 5G network. It wants to reach 80 percent of the population with 5G in the coming year, and 99 percent by 2025. It will use old 3G antennas for 5G connections.
