President-elect Joe Biden said he would nominate California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for secretary of health and human services on Monday as one of the top officials on his team to fight the raging Covid pandemic.

Biden chose Becerra, 62, a Latino former congressman, as he faces more pressure to add diversity to his cabinet appointments, including complaints from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus about the number of Latinos.

Nancy Pelosi described the healthcare team selections as "critical in the Covid fight.” California has imposed strict stay-at-home orders amid spike in Covid cases.

Meanwhile, Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer to Donald Trump, has tested positive for Covid.

Chinese vaccine company Sinovac has announced that it is planning to complete a new facility to double its annual vaccine production capacity to 600 million doses by the end of the year. South Korea has said it will boost testing as Covid cases continue to surge. — Agencies
