MADURAI: The Madurai rural police arrested 1,100 people for staging road blocks in various places in the district in support of farmers protesting in Delhi demanding scrapping of the new farm laws. The arrested protesters include 240 women.
Police said opposition parties blocked roads in 15 places including Thirumangalam, Usilampatti, Alanganallur and Melur. They were arrested and released later.
Oppositions parties including DMK, CPM, CPI, MDMK and VCK tried to block trains at the railway junction. But police prevented them. After raising slogans against the Centre and the state government, the protesters left the place.
Members of the CITU staged protests in front of TNSTC depots raising slogans supporting farmers. They also raised slogans against the central government.
The Bharat Bandh called by farmers evoked partial response in Madurai district. Several shops remained closed. Public transport was operated as usual. The city roads were crowded as usual.
Police deployments were made at various places including central and state government offices as a precautionary measure.
