Hyderabad, December 7
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday visited Government General Hospital here and interacted with those afflicted by the mysterious illness even as the number of patients rose to 347.
A team of doctors from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences from Mangalagiri visited the hospital and collected blood samples.
Health officials said about 200 patients had already been discharged and there was no need to panic. Most of the victims were in the 20-30 age-group, while there were about 45 children below the age of 12. The officials said they suspected that fogging could have caused the disease. People fell unconscious after suffering from symptoms of fits and nausea.
The affected persons complained of three to five minutes of epileptic fits without repetition, forgetfulness, anxiety, vomiting, headache and back pain. The outbreak started from Eluru town and claimed one life.
Blood tests, CT scan and cerebral spinal fluid tests also turned out to be normal. The authorities are awaiting some more reports.
Revu Mutyala Raju, West Godavari District Collector, has said the disease was not contagious. The collector said in Eluru one or two persons in every household reported symptoms of this mystery disease.
