After getting the approval of Attorney General KK Venugopal, a law student has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against cartoonist Rachita Taneja to initiate criminal contempt proceedings.
This petition has been filed against the Supreme Court over the alleged objectionable tweet by Rachita Taneja. The petitioner received approval from the Attorney General this week to initiate contempt proceedings against Taneja. After this, the petitioner filed the petition on Saturday.
Law student Aditya Kashyap has filed this contempt petition through advocate Namit Saxena. The petition claimed that Taneja's post went viral and was widely shared by people attacking the judiciary.
Advocate-on-record (AOR) Saxena said that to initiate criminal contempt proceedings, the Attorney General stated in his written consent that these posts were intended to tarnish the court's image and undermine its authority in the public eye.
The consent of the Attorney General or Solicitor General is required under the law to initiate contempt proceedings against a person. There is a provision for a fine of Rs 2,000 and criminal imprisonment up to six months on criminal contempt of the Supreme Court.
