The Aam Aadmi Party leader, and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, became the first political leader to have paid a visit to one of the sites of the ongoing farmers protest at the Delhi-Haryana border. He has already extended his support for the farmers to protest and has made it public that the demands of the farmers were 'justified'. The Aam Aadmi Party is also supporting the farmer's call for 'Bharat Bandh' on December 8.
"I have checked the arrangements. We were under pressure to allow the use of Stadiums as temporary prisons, but we did not...our party MLAs and ministers have been involved in ensuring that farmers do not face any discomfort," he said speaking to reporters.
Tens of thousands of farmers have been agitating demanding the repeal of farm laws. The protest mainly focused on the borders of Delhi with Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, which have affected the traffic situation across regions including Tikri, Jharoda, Kapashera, and Rajokri among others. The Delhi police have issued an advisory for commuters as multiple borders between Delhi and neighboring states remained closed for traffic for yet another day on December 7th.
The multiple meetings held between the central government officials, central ministers, and the farmer leaders of various mandi's remain unresolved.
All eyes will now be on the next round of talks scheduled on December 9th. In the last meeting, the Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar had told the farmers that the government needed more time for discussions and that a fresh proposal would be tabled at the next meeting. Farmers of Punjab overwhelmingly are up in arms against the laws and fear aim of doing away with the middleman and allowing farmers to sell their products anywhere in the country, will benefit corporate players, not the farmers, something that the Modi-government and the BJP have termed as 'untrue'.
