9 new movies, shows, and documentaries releasing this week on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and more

This week comes primed with an exceptional collection of thrillers and funny watches

Digital platforms all seem to be in agreement that the next seven days will play host to a great set of thrillers across the board. Bollywood is back in action with three major releases—Durgamati The Myth, Lahore Confidential, and Torbaaz. International creators too have stepped in with intense narratives in Alice in Borderland and I’m Your Woman. However, not all is serious as we find comic relief with Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep starring in The Prom. Make sure you’re well-rested, because these picks are not to be missed.

Mr. Iglesias season 3 (December 8)

Gabriel Iglesias is all set to return into the shoes of a loving high-school teacher for the show's third outing and it's time for junior year. The comedy series tackles the daily lives of a group of skilled yet oddball students, who are guided by their motivating and witty teacher, Mr Iglesias. More than teaching history, he believes in helping his students make history and have a lot of fun while doing it.

Rose Island (December 9)

After being fired from his job, losing his girlfriend, and hitting a sour patch with his parents, Giorgio does what no person in that situation would do—build an island in the middle of the sea. Shunned by the Italian society in the late '60s, he is determined to have his own island as an escape and gathers a team of rebels and outcasts to aid him. Together they lay the foundation for the Republic of Rose Island, with Giorgio as President. Before the group can begin to enjoy their independence, the Italian Prime Minister declares their newfound paradise as the country's mortal enemy. Surprisingly, it's based on a true story.

The Surgeon's Cut (December 9)

Explore the universe of surgery and medicine with an in-depth dive into the lives of four world-renowned surgeons who've contributed tremendously to their respective fields of foetal medication, neurosurgery, transplant procedures and cardiology. The docuseries will follow the doctors in question as they perform vital operations while reminiscing about their journey, and also giving valuable insights into the constant progress being made in the field of medicine.

Alice In Borderland (December 10)

Arisu has little interests in the world apart from video games. Living a jobless and mundane life in Tokyo, his existence transcends into weirdness when he finds himself in a deserted version of the city along with his friends. As the group navigates this peculiar world, they realise that they must compete in deadly games to survive. Arisu fights his way through the obstacles and runs into a young girl, Usagi. The two decide to team up and solve the mystery of this world while trying not to perish.

I'm Your Woman (December 11)

Set in the '70s, the film follows a young woman, Jean, who faces the consequences of her husband's illegal ways of life when he disappears after betraying his partners. Jean realises that her life is in danger and escapes with her baby as people come looking for them. This crime thriller chronicles her transformation from a timid mother to a fierce protector who would go to any lengths to save her child.

Durgamati The Myth (December 11) 

The thefts of 12 holy idols create havoc across the country, and politician Ishwar Prasad (Arshad Warsi) vows to quit his post if they aren't recovered in time. His rivals see this as an opportunity to blame the thefts on Ishwar and try to convince a jailed IAS officer, Chanchal Chauhan (Bhumi Pednekar), to testify against him in exchange for her freedom. To keep her involvement from the public, Chanchal is taken to a battered mansion to be interrogated. The seemingly perfect plan soon goes south when she gets possessed by an ancient spirit who calls herself Durgamati.

Lahore Confidential (December 11) 

A major terrorist attack forces the Indian authorities to send a RAW agent, Ananya (Richa Chadha), undercover into Pakistan under the guise of a writer. Her task is to investigate and report the people funding these terrorist organisations. During her stay, she ends up meeting Rauf (Arunoday Singh), develops feelings for him, and they start dating. In a twist of fate, he turns out to be an ISI agent working against India and Ananya is forced to pick between her feelings and the love for her country.

The Prom (December 11)

A failed broadway production forces a group of narcissistic actors to look elsewhere in order to gain public attention. The perfect opportunity arrives in the form of a conundrum in a small town in Indiana where Emma Nolan, a high school girl, is forbidden from attending prom with her girlfriend. The group decides to take a road trip to support Emma's cause and at the same time, use the situation to revamp their images. The film features a stellar cast including Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, and James Corden, among others.

Torbaaz (December 11)

Sanjay Dutt plays a man dealing with personal loss after the death of his wife and son in a bomb blast. He returns to the place of the incident in the Middle East and takes it upon himself to prevent the kids in a refugee camp from becoming suicide bombers. His method of distraction is the game of cricket which he uses to give these children an incentive to live. As the war between western forces and parts of the Middle East rages on, one man's determination might save innocent lives from being lost.
