Japan has now started to welcome back at least few international travelers. Japan is thinking about reopening its borders to all international tourists next spring, around April 2021. The entry bans would be lifted before the scheduled Tokyo Olympic Games next summer.
However, travel for tourism and other non-essential purposes is still not allowed in Japan.
The CDC has recently placed Japan at Level 4 of risk (Very High Level of COVID-19). This is most likely due to a recent increase in infection numbers, especially in Sapporo, Osaka, Tokyo and Nagoya.
All countries will be welcome in Japan, but only restricted groups of people such as business travelers, residents or students will be allowed to visit. Tourism or leisure tourism will remain closed.
All visitors in Japan will need to test negative before arrival and stay in self-isolation for 14 days. Using public transport will not be permitted for them during that period.
