Tesla Makes Full Self Driving More Accessible To Some Customers By Lowering Price

Tesla Inc's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Full Self Driving (FSD) Beta continues to impress, with many fans and Tesla owners posting videos of their FSD Beta experiences on social media. But with a price tag of $10,000, it's just too expensive for many people.

In the past, Tesla offered an Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) purchase option. While it's no longer available, it offered many of the features that the FSD package offers today. And while EAP owners can upgrade to FSD, the cost is even more for them, as they initially paid $5,000, and the upgrade cost was $6,000, for a total of $11,000 for FSD.

Now those EAP owners are on even ground with everyone else, as Electrek reports those owners can now upgrade for $5,000, bringing their total cost to $10,000, the same as anyone else buying a new Tesla today.

Benzinga's Take: While this is a nice step forward, it could be even nicer if Tesla gave these long-time owners a slight discount to upgrade. After all, these people have supported Tesla for years at this point, as EAP was discontinued in February 2019. Either way, now owners can get a taste of the future for slightly less than the day before.

  • South Korea tightens restrictions amid COVID spike

    South Korea will impose heightened social distancing rules for the capital and surrounding areas, health officials said on Sunday (December 6) amid the country's largest wave of coronavirus infections in nine months. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported 631 new cases as of midnight on Saturday (December 5), the largest daily tally since a peak in February and early March. Despite seeing initial success through steps including aggressive contact, nearly a month of triple-digit daily infections has brought South Korea's total to more than 37,500 with 545 deaths. On Sunday Health Minister Park Neung-hoo said the country was in a "very dangerous situation" that is on the verge of expanding into a "nationwide pandemic". Under measures starting on Tuesday (December 8), gatherings of 50 or more people are prohibited, gyms and karaoke bars must close, religious services must be online or by broadcast and stricter attendance limits will be placed on school classes. Many of the recent cases are centered on Seoul and Sunday's rule change is in addition to unprecedented curfews that came into effect in the capital on Saturday, where most establishments now have to close at 9pm and public transport has been cut back by 30% in the evenings.

  • Surfer escapes shark attack in South Australia

    A surfer has managed to escape a shark attack on the coast of South Australia. The 29-year-old man is understood to have been bitten by a great white shark in Kangaroo Island waters on Sunday afternoon (local time). He was airlifted to hospital in Adelaide after emergency services were called to D’Estrees Bay about 2.20pm, with reports a surfer had been bitten. "The man managed to paddle back to shore and sought help from a member of the public who drove him toward Kingscote," South Australia Police said. "Paramedics met the car en route and transported the man the rest of the way to the hospital. He was then airlifted to Adelaide for treatment."
