Ukhrul, December 06 2020: The Ukhrul Autonomous District Council (UADC) members have urged the State Government to hold the ADC election on time to maintain the continuity of local self governance in the wider interests of the tribal community.

Speaking to media persons today at his residence at Phungreitang, Ukhrul ADC Chairman Dr Yaronsho Ngalung came out strongly against the dissolution of the ADCs and added that this is discrimination of the tribal community of the State.

Asking the existing six district council members to vacate their offices by November 30 was unfair, alleged Dr Yaronsho.

He demanded that the State Government should first announce the date for election before expiry of their term.

HAC had already recommended for conduct of ADC election on time as the six month extension expired on November 30.Dr Yaronsho also slammed Chief Minister N Biren's statement that the COVID-19 situation in the hills will first be reviewed for conduct of ADC election in the six hill districts.

Keeping election at bay is an act of humiliating the tribals, he alleged.

Picking other alleged loopholes, Dr Yaronsho questioned why the Chairmen of the six ADCs should not be retained as caretakers until the election is held and cited the example of 2015 when the ADC Chairmen then were retained as caretakers until the election was held.

Dr Yaronsho warned that if the Government fails to address their grievances, all the six ADC members will resort into different forms of democratic agitation.

This is to safeguard the tribals and pursuing legal process cannot be ruled out, added the ADC Chairman.

ADC Member Edmund Chiphang said that dissolving the ADCs without first working out the poll schedules amounts to robbing the rights of the tribal people at the grassroot level.

Another ADC Member Wezope that the tribal people of Manipur were deprived of their political rights for 20 long years and added that the present situation amounts to robbing the tribal people of their rights.
