MANGALURU: Surathkal-based National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NIT-K) has successfully completed admissions through virtual mode to its first-year BTech courses and online classes for freshers will begin from December 14.
Due to the pandemic, the premier institute had cancelled physical reporting for fresh candidates admitted to first-year engineering courses and opted for an online process.
Adka Nityananda Shetty, dean (academics), NIT-K, said online reporting was done after completion of the sixth round of counselling by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Students were also admitted through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship schemes.
“Currently, all candidates who have confirmed seats for BTech programmes have been admitted,” Shetty said.
The institute has so far filled 1,080 seats including 981 JEE advanced seats. This year’s admission has also seen 20% supernumerary seats for women. These include about 85 admissions under DASA and 14 students through ICCR.
Shetty said supernumerary (additional seats) was decided on to restore gender diversity as most engineering courses are generally skewed in favour of boys.
In 2018, the government suggested enrolling more girls through supernumerary seats. The plan was to achieve 14% female enrolment in 2018-19, 17% in 2019-20, and 20% in 2020-21. The institute has also recalled Phd and MTech final year students to campus to carry out their academic work.
