Three days after a woman hanged self in her house in Perumbakkam, police arrested her boyfriend on abetment charges since investigation revealed that he verbally abused her on a video call and watched her commit suicide.
Chennai: The deceased K Bharathi (24) of Perumbakkam, a private firm employee, allegedly became friends with one Muthu Kumaresan (32) of Alankulam in Virudhunagar district, who works as an ambulance driver in Nagpur for Army, through Helo App and developed a relationship with him.
On November 18, Muthu Kumaresan visited Bharathi in Chennai when she came to know that the former is already married and father of two children. While she started avoiding him, Muthu Kumaresan allegedly continued to harass her, demanding a relationship with her.
On December 2, they spoke again on a video call when Bharathi allegedly threatened Muthu Kumaresan that she would end her life if he harasses her again.
“When she tried to cut her veins with a knife, Muthu Kumaresan asked her to hang herself. The entire conversation has been recorded on the phone,” said police. While Perumbakkam police initially booked a case under Section 174 of the CrPC, the case was altered after the video evidence was retrieved and Muthu Kumaresan was arrested.
Though he claims that he did not know that Bharathi would end her life, police say that he witnessed her hanging. He was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday night.
