PANAJI: The Goa State Election Commission (SEC) will announce the dates for the zilla panchayat election today evening. Voting is likely to be held on December 12 and counting on December 14.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that the zilla panchayat elections are likely to be held this month.
Speaking to reporters Sawant had said that the dates have been recommended to the state election commission (SEC) and SEC will announce the dates. “SEC has said that the elections will be held soon and I am sure it will be held in December itself,” Sawant said.
Panchayat minister Mauvin Godinho on Wednesday proposed two probable dates to the chief minister for the zilla panchayat elections. “The election commission had given me the files and accordingly I have proposed January 9 and 16, 2021, both being Saturdays. The final decision will be taken by the chief minister in consultation with the state election commission and me,” Godinho said.
The SEC, at a meeting held on Tuesday with Goa Police and both district collectors, decided to hold the zilla panchayat polls this month or in January in consultation with the government.
The elections were initially scheduled for March 15, but the state government postponed them to March 22 due to the threat of Covid-19. However on March 20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the imposition of a ‘Janata curfew’ two days later, prompting the state government to push the elections to March 24.
