Kangana looks exactly like J jayalalithaa in the poster where she is seen in white saree. The film was earlier scheduled to release on june 26 but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the release date becomes uncertain. To be simultaneously released in tamil, hindi, and telugu, thalaivi is directed by Vijay. The biopic covers Jayalalithaa's journey to emerging as one of the biggest stars and ends with her becoming the chief minister of tamil Nadu for the first time. To ensure that kangana need not put on weight, the later days will not be shown in the film.
