The State branch of Indian Medical Association has decided to join the protest against the Union Government’s decision to allow postgraduate Ayurveda practitioners to perform general surgeries and other procedures. The Indian Medical Association is likely to refrain from non-essential medical services on December 11 to protest against the move.
Chennai: In a recent amendment to the Indian Medicine Central Council Regulations, 2016, the Central Council of Indian Medicine included the regulation to permit postgraduate students of Ayurveda to perform surgeries and other procedures related to the ear, throat, nose, eye and dentistry.
Terming this as ‘mixopathy’, the association opposed the move, arguing that mixing the two different systems of medicine would lead to interference in medical education and affect the purity of the allopathic medicine system.
“We respect the work of Ayurveda practitioners in their own medicine system and their contribution in healthcare. However, the mixopathy of two systems of medicine will result in complications. The same idea of mixing of two systems was rejected when proposed under the National Medical Commission,” said Dr CN Raja, president of Indian Medical Association’s Tamil Nadu State Branch.
On December 11, members of State branch would withdraw non-essential medical services, non-COVID services and other surgeries as a mark of protest against mixopathy of systems of medicine.
“The members will follow all safety protocols, and essential emergency services, deliveries and COVID-19 medical services will be attended on December 11. Other procedures and services will be on strike,” said Dr Raja.
