Fire destroys tehsil office in north Kashmir

Baramulla, Dec 5 (UNI) Major fire destroyed records and other material in the Tehsil office at Handwara in the north Kashmir district of Kupwara on Saturday evening, official sources said.

District administration has ordered an inquiry.

They said fire broke out in tehsil office Handwara Saturday evening at 1700 hours from a room. However, before the fire tenders could reach the spot the entire wooden building of the office was in flames, clearly visibly from a distance.

Fire tenders and locals joined the operation and fire was brought under control, they said, adding fire was again noticed in one of the rooms in the attic.

Later, more fire tenders joined the operation and finally the fire was brought under control after several hours. However, the office record and building had been damaged completely, they added. The cause of fire was not known, they said, adding police have registered a case and initiated proceedings.
