A candle march was held in memory of Gajjan Singh of Khatran village, who lost his life at the Tikri point on the Delhi border, in the agitation against three ordinances of the Central Government.

Residents of around 13 villages, including Ghulal, Khatra, Madpur, Dhindsa, Lal Kalan, Balala, Kubba, Lopon, Bijlipur, Rohra, Dhande and Ladran, joined the candle march to pay tributes to the martyr and demand compensation for the bereaved family members.

Gajjan, who represented Bharti Kisan Union Ekta (Sidhupur), stayed at the Ghulal toll plaza from dawn to dusk to show resentment against the farm Bills when the protest started. He supplied tea to protesters apart from washing utensils at the toll plaza.

“When we asked him to return home in the late evening Gajjan would say his duty was still not done. He would serve the last tea before leaving for his place in Khatran village,” shared a fellow protestor.

“When the programme for ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement was being finalised, he was the first to volunteer from among the group. He fought at the Tikri point relentlessly till his last breath. We will never let his sacrifice go in vain,” shared another farmer of Kubba village.

“Now, we are planning a similar candle march at Samrala. His kin should be adequately compensated by the government,” said a farmer of Ghulal village.
