MADURAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1,296crore project to bring water from Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala to Madurai city through pipelines. The chief minister said the project would be completed by 2023 and all the 100 wards in Madurai Corporation would get water supply 24x7.
He said the government was striving to ensure protected drinking water for all. “The water supply in the state was 4,900 MLD in 2011 when the AIADMK came to power. Now it has gone up to 7,600 MLD. In addition, 76 comprehensive water schemes are being implemented in the state, and work is in progress,” he said.
The Centre and the state government were working on providing protected water supply not only to people in the cities but also in villages, he said. It was proposed to give 40 lakh pipeline connections at a cost of Rs 3,600 crore. Seven lakh connections had been given till date, he said.
The chief minister inaugurated an additional building for the Madurai district collectorate, constructed at a cost of Rs 30.19 crore.
