PIL in SC seeks directions to remove protesting farmers at Delhi borders

New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Supreme Court on Friday sought directions to the authorities concerned to immediately remove the protesting ryots from the border areas of Delhi, citing commuters' hardships due to the road blockades and rising Coronavirus cases.

In his plea, a law student Rishabh Sharma through advocate Om Prakash Parihar, said that despite the advisories not to hold large gathering amid the pandemic, lakhs of farmers have gathered on Delhi borders and this might lead to a rise in Covid cases.

"Though the Police has allotted a dedicated place for the protestors to protest peacefully, the protesters are not shifting/moving to the allotted place and in order to create trouble for the commuters they have blocked the borders. Furthermore, owing to their large number of protestors, the police is not able to control such a large gathering," the petitioner claimed.

The agitation was causing hurdles while accessing emergency medical services, the PIL read.

The petition also referred the Apex Court verdict of October 7 on a plea against the blockade of a road in Shaheen Bagh area in the National Capital by those protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act.

The top court in its order had said that public spaces cannot be occupied indefinitely and demonstrations expressing dissent have to be in designated places alone.
