Featuring a multi role Quad Camera, a long-lasting, fast-charging battery and an “immersive Infinity-U Display”, Samsung knows the bulk of its sales and those of competitors are in the mid-range, with 42 obviously the correct answer to life, the universe and everything.

Samsung’s flagship smartphones series starts with an S, as in the S20 Ultra, along with the highly anticipated S21 to come, which rumours say will come with a stylus, too.

Away from the $1000 to $2000 smartphones from Samsung, which can go even higher with the foldable series of hybrid smartphone tablet phones, Samsung has the A series of mid-range models that appeal to the everyday smartphone buyer.

After all, not everyone needs the most advanced specs to get everyday tasks done, and this includes being able to access superfast 5G networks, too, at least when in range of one.

So, it’s no surprise to see Samsung releasing its A42 5G smartphone, which the company says further strengthens its “A Series line-up and bringing 5G connectivity throughout the portfolio. It is packed with all the essential innovation consumers have come to expect with Galaxy A Series, including a Quad Camera, Infinity-U Display and Long Lasting Battery”.

Samsung’s Garry McGregor, the VP of Samsung Electronics Australia’s IT and Mobile division said: “We’re excited to bring to market our latest 5G smartphone in the A Series line-up. The Galaxy A42 5G delivers premium Samsung features and innovation, is powered for the latest super-fast 5G networks, and is part of our ongoing commitment to deliver next-generation connectivity to more Australians.”

So, what is Samsung saying about the various features and benefits of this new phone, which for many may well be the late 2020 answer to a phone that can handle life, the universe and just about everything?

5G entertainment on a big screen

Well, when it comes to 5G, Samsung assures is its Galaxy A42 5G delivers fast streaming and downloading. “Whether playing mobile games on the go or watching your favourite programmes, the high speed network connectivity will ensure there is less lag and peak performance every time”.

“The immersive 6.6 inch HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U Display brings your favourite movies to life in cinematic clarity and the Fast Charging 5,000mAh (typical) battery means you can keep watching, playing and scrolling for longer.

“On the rear is a layered pattern that creates a modern, high quality finish. The sleek design and rounded edges makes it comfortable to hold and easy to operate one-handed. It is available in three eye-catching colours; Prism Dot Black, Prism Dot White and Prism Dot Grey”.

Quad camera: capture and share, in the moment

Here, Samsung says its Galaxy A42 5G “features powerful multi role Quad Camera that makes capturing or recording those memorable moments to share with your friends easier than ever.

“The 48MP Main Camera, along with 8MP Ultra Wide Camera allows you to capture life's moments with more clarity, taking breath-taking landscape images or even perfect snaps of your furry friends, while the 5MP Macro Camera and 5MP Depth Camera capture intricate details of close-up objects and can create a background blur effect around the subject. There is a 20MP Selfie Camera on the front for next-level selfie shots and crystal clear video calls”.

Storage and RAM:

Combining 128GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM, along with MicroSD support up to 1TB, Samsung says “you’ll be able to capture and save videos and photos without worrying about running out of storage space”.

Available now and priced at $599 in Australia, this mid-range phone with its mid-range CPU will obviously not be as super fast as the latest flagship models, and while the reviews will confirm it or otherwise, there should be more than enough grunt for the everyday tasks this phone is designed for.

Now’s the Time for 400G Migration

The optical fibre community is anxiously awaiting the benefits that 400G capacity per wavelength will bring to existing and future fibre optic networks.

Nearly every business wants to leverage the latest in digital offerings to remain competitive in their respective markets and to provide support for fast and ever-increasing demands for data capacity. 400G is the answer.

Initial challenges are associated with supporting such project and upgrades to fulfil the promise of higher-capacity transport.

The foundation of optical networking infrastructure includes coherent optical transceivers and digital signal processing (DSP), mux/demux, ROADM, and optical amplifiers, all of which must be able to support 400G capacity.

With today’s proprietary power-hungry and high cost transceivers and DSP, how is migration to 400G networks going to be a viable option?

PacketLight's next-generation standardised solutions may be the answer. Click below to read the full article.
