Chennai: The Nungambakkam police had already nabbed seven men for a similar offence and based on inputs and call records from their phones, the police arrested three more -- J Sultan Liakath Ali (32) of Thoothukudi, D Bhaskar (37) of Tondiarpet and A Ismail (35) of Pudupet. A total of 13 motorbikes were seized from the gang.
Investigation revealed that they sold the engines of some of the stolen vehicles to one D Shohan Kumar (32) of Kotturpuram and the latter was also picked up. After questioning him, the police said Shohan, an aerospace engineering graduate, used stolen vehicle engines to do projects for college students. “Since nobody would question the engine particulars and documents in such projects, the accused found it a better way to sell them and Shohan bought them knowing that they were stolen.
He met them in Pudupet, where he often visited to buy scrapped engines for the projects and charged up to Rs 2 lakh for each project,” said Nagarajan, crime inspector attached to the Kotturpuram police station. He also said that all other accused met in prison and formed a WhatsApp group to ‘help’ each other after they came out. While the four were remanded in judicial custody, the police said a few more arrests have to be made.
