Covid toll past 300 but fatality rate lowest since May

Gurgaon: The city crossed the grim milestone of 300 Covid deaths on Wednesday, with the last 100 added in 38 days. The fatality rate in November, when the city witnessed the third spike in daily cases, however, was lower than in October as well as the last two periods of surge in June and September.
Till July 5, 100 individuals had succumbed to the infection in Gurgaon, which grew to 200 on October 27. The city had recorded just four Covid deaths as on May 31. The current toll is 306.
Even though the district witnessed the third spike in daily cases through November, it recorded six fewer deaths last month compared to June when the city had witnessed the highest fatalities (86). The Covid-19 death rate in the city which was at 0.7% on October 27 according to the health department, has reduced to 0.59% currently.
The city’s CFR was 0.5% in May, 1.8% in June, 1.4% in July, 1.1% in August, 0.8% in September, 0.7% in October.
A demographic analysis of the city’s overall Covid deaths shows that the elderly population of the city succumbed to the infection more than their younger counterparts. Majority of deaths (84) were recorded in the age group of of 61years to 70 years, followed by 73 deaths in the bracket of 71 years to 80 years, 46 in the 51 years to 60 years group, and 38 in the 81 years to 90 years age category.
While three deaths have occurred among individuals who are between 91 and 100 years of age, one person died of Covid who was more than 100 years old. So far, the city has not seen any Covid deaths between the ages 0 to 20. Four deaths have been reported among patients who are between 21 years and 30 years of age, and 24 people who were between the age 31 and 40 have died of Covid.
Out of 302 people died of Covid-19 in the city, 232 had co-morbidities. Similarly, a month-wise study of Covid fatalities points out that November saw the second-highest number of Covid causalties, followed by September and October when the city recorded 40 deaths each. This month, the city has witnessed 10 deaths so far. “Yes, November recorded the second highest Covid deaths as the case load was higher. But the fatality rate is 0.59%. We have been working for the last two months to keep the case fatality rate below 1% and we have finally been able to achieve it by treating patients timely, and efficient contact tracing and early isolation. Our teams are reaching out daily to patients in home isolation. We have a majority of active cases under home isolation, and so, it is a big concern,” said Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurgaon.
According to the health department data, 69 of the patients who died of Covid had no comorbidity conditions and 90 died of multiple comorbid conditions. The department is still investigating 36 of the deaths. Meanwhile, 30 of those who died of Covid had diabetes and 29 had heart disease, 19 had cancer, 14 had hypertension, four had neurological disorder, six had liver problems and five had kidney ailments. Out of the 302 deaths, 211 were on ventilators, while 76 were on oxygen support. Nine were on BiPAP and six were on NIV support.
Meanwhile, Haryana has 1% fatality rate. Till Saturday, it recorded 2,488 Covid deaths out of which 1,694 are male and 793 are female. Faridabad has the highest number of Covid deaths at 451 followed by Gurgaon at 302.
Haryana has witnessed 25 deaths under home isolation so far and the most came from Fatehabad (5) followed by Pachkula (4). Meanwhile, Yamunanager, Jind, Faridabad and Charkhi Dadri witnessed two Covid deaths among patients in home isolation so far whereas Kaithal, Bhiwani, Rewari, Kaithal and Kurukshetra have reported one each.
