New Zealand captain Kane Williamson led from the front with a double century to guide the hosts to a huge total in their first innings on Day 2 of the first Test against West Indies, at Seddon Park, in Hamilton, on Friday.
Williamson hit a splendid 251, studded with 34 boundaries and two sixes as New Zealand declared their first innings on 519/7. Opener Tom Latham (86) and Kyle Jamieson (51) were the other major contributors for the hosts.
Resuming on 243/2, New Zealand lost the wickets of Ross Taylor (38), Henry Nicholls (7), Tom Blundell (14) and Daryl Mitchell (9) in the first two sessions as the visitors made a good comeback with the ball.
Williamson stood tall with the bat as he put on 72 runs for the fifth wicket with Tom Blundell and then added 56 runs for the sixth wicket with Daryl Mitchell.
No 8 Kyle Jamieson showed his utility with the bat, as he stroked a fluent 51 from 64 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes, putting on 94 runs for the seventh wicket with Williamson to take the Kiwis past the 500-run mark.
Williamson enjoyed a lifeline after scoring his double century as he was caught behind off a no-ball from Kemar Roach as the pacer had overstepped.
Resuming on 97, the New Zealand captain reached his 22nd Test century, with a four off Roach and brought up his double hundred off the same bowler with a stylish four through the covers.
