Fixed broadband internet traffic in Portugal increased by 53 percent in the third quarter of 2020 compared to the same period last year, according to a report by the National Communications Authority (Anacom). Average monthly traffic per line was 193 GB, up 45.7 percent year-on-year. The Covid-19 pandemic led to changes in service usage patterns, resulting in an acceleration of internet traffic growth.
During the reference period, 83.9 percent of households had fixed broadband (+4.1%), while the number of fixed broadband accesses increased 4.9 percent to 4.1 million. FTTH was the main access technology, accounting for 53.8 percent of total connections (+4.4%), while cable increased by 1.3 percent and now represents 29.3 percent of the total.
Meo had a 40.4 percent market share, ahead of NOS Group (35.2%), Vodafone (20.4%) and Nowo/Onitelecom Group (3.6%).
