Movistar Peru (Telefonica) said it intends to bring 4G services to over 1,600 rural localities in the southern Huancavelica region under its "Internet para todos" (IPT) initiative with Facebook, BID Invest and CAF. A total of 140,000 residents in the region have already been connected, rising to 158,000 by the end of the year, said the operator during an event held in Pachamarca to inaugurate the town's 4G service.
IPT has so far connected more than 1.6 million Peruvians in over 11,000 communities since officially launching as a rural mobile infrastructure operator (OIMR). Its aim is to reach more than 6 million Peruvians in 30,000-plus communities by 2021, the bicentenary of the country’s independence.
