MANGALURU: A three-day-old girl died after the autorickshaw she was travelling in, along with her mother, toppled near Kalpane, Benjanapadavu, in Bantwal taluk on Wednesday.
According to police, Umai Banu, a resident of Moodbidri taluk, had given birth to a baby girl on November 30, and on Wednesday, was declared fit for discharge from the hospital. The family decided to travel back home in the Nagu-Magu ambulance, that provides drop back facility for postnatal mothers and their infant. However, the ambulance driver informed that they can travel up to Kaikamba. The mother, infant and Umai’s elder sister boarded the ambulance, only to learn that the vehicle was passing via Bantwal-Kaikamba to reach Puttur and not Gurupura-Kaikamba, as they assumed. After getting down in Kaikamba in Bantwal, they took an autorickshaw to go to Kotebagilu in Moodbidri. On reaching near Kalpane in Benjanapadavu, the autorickshaw toppled, and the infant died on the spot. The mother, her elder sister and driver sustained minor injuries.
A case has been registered at the Bantwal traffic police station in this regard.
