The German cabinet has approved an updated version of the Artificial Intelligence strategy, increasing investment in AI by 2025 from EUR 3 billion to EUR 5 billion. The funds come from the economic stimulus package as well as a future package. A first AI strategy was published in November 2018 and the new one focuses on research, expertise, transfer and application, regulatory framework and society. Moreover, new challenges such as sustainability, environmental and climate protection, fighting pandemics, as well as building international and European networks, are part of the new initiative.
The update follows discussions with experts active in business, science, politics and society. The main topics of the discussions were research, transfer, Industry 4.0, mobility, health and care, environmental and climate protection as well as regulatory framework for the use of AI in work and society. With the new strategy, Germany aims to become a major driver of innovation for Artificial Intelligence in Europe and support the European Union in its efforts to step up to the international competition and set standards worldwide in AI in the future. Europe should build technological sovereignty in technologies such as AI, the government said.
