AP: Country's first Bionic hand launched in TTD-run BIRRD in Tirupati

Tirupati, Dec 3 (UNI) : The TTD-run BIRRD ( Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research, Rehabilitation for the Disabled) Orthopedic hospital launched the country's first Bionic Hand here on Thursday.
Participating in the event via video conference at BIRRD here, TTD Trust Board Chairman YV Subba Reddy said, under the instructions of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy, BIRRD will be developed in to a super specialty hospital in the field of treating Ortho related ailments.
He said he is so happy that the Hospital has launched the Bionic Hand, a revolution in the field of artificial limb usage in medicine on the day of International Day of Persons with Disability.
Later, he interacted with Ms.Gayathri from Hyderabad to whom the first bionic hand was inserted. She expressed immense satisfaction over the functioning of the hand which is arranged to her left arm.
Meanwhile, the Makers Hive firm which has created this arm inspired by former President of India, Late Abdul Kalam named it after him as "Kal Arm"(the arm of future for the needy).
According to representatives of Bionic Hand makers, this artificial hand costs around 35-40 lakhs in foreign nations while they are manufacturing per piece at Rs.2.75 lakhs only. The hand has the capacity to lift nearly 8 kilos.
TTD Joint Executive Officer P Basanth Kumar, BIRRD Director Dr Madan Mohan Reddy were also present.

Cyclone Burevi: Kerala CM convenes high level meeting

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 3 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday convened a high-level meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and other departments in view of emergence of cyclone 'Burevi'
The meeting reviewed various precautionary measures taken in seven districts, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain and wind in south Kerala from December 3 to 5.
