Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 3 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday convened a high-level meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and other departments in view of emergence of cyclone 'Burevi'
The meeting reviewed various precautionary measures taken in seven districts, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain and wind in south Kerala from December 3 to 5.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today in the wake of Cyclone.
Amit Shah told the Chief Minister that "the Modi Government is committed for all possible support to help people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Several teams of NDRF are already deployed in both the states."
As a precaution, the operation of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport will be suspended from 1000 hrs to 1800 hrs on December 4 in view of the cyclone.
People from dangerous zones are being shifted to 217 rehabilitation camps set up by the revenue department which plans to accommodate 15,840 people in these camps in Thiruvananthapuram district. The Government also took steps to set up total 2,849 camps all over the state to rehabilitate people.
Rapid Response Teams have been deployed in the city to help people living in low lying areas.
A '24X7' help line number (1077) has been announced to provide any kind of emergency help from the district collectorate.
Health Minister KK Shailaja said direction has been given to ensure availability of medicines including anti-snake venom, emergency medical kits and efficient ambulance service in all health centres to control the spread of epidemic and provide medical attention to COVID patients.
The IMD issued a Red Alert on December 3 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki districts and predicted 204.5 mm rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Orange Alert has been issued on December 3 in Kottayam and Ernakulam districts and on December 4 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts and predicted 115.6 mm-204.4 mm rainfall during the next 24 hours.
Yellow Alert was issued on December 3 and 4 in Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts and on December 5 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts and on December 6 in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Wayanad, Malappuram districts and predicted 64.5 mm rainfall in these districts in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, 117 people including estate employees at Ponmudi layam have been shifted to rehabilitation camps in KSRTC buses.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in seven districts of Kerala in view of the Cyclone Burevi which is likely to pass through Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram district in the State. The NDRF teams were pressed into service in various places including Kollam, Ksrunagappally, Paravur, Akappuzha, Vandanam, Ambalappuzha, Purakkad, Idukki, Painavu and Pathanamthitta, to speed up shifting of people from low lying areas.
The Government has also sought the help of the Navy and the Air Force to deal with any kind of emergency situation due to the cyclone. The people in the district were informed not to move outside for the next 48 hours from December three afternoon.
Steps are taken to raise the shutters to bring down the water levels of various dams including Thenmala, Neyyar, Kallada, Kakki, Aruvikkara, Kallada, Malankara, Kundala, Siruvani, Kanjirappuzha, Walayar, Pothundi, Karappuzha in view of heavy rains due to the cyclone.
