Chandigarh, December 2

As the annual general body and executive committee meeting of the Chandigarh Olympic Association (COA) approaches on December 4, dissent is brewing among members associated with the sports body.

Chander Mukhi Sharma, secretary, Basketball Federation of India (BFI), and president, Chandigarh Basketball Association, has come on record while opposing call for the meeting as he claimed that the term of the current House had already ended and a direct election should be held for the office-bearers.

He also opposed the association’s call for distributing Rs 10,000 among various associations just before this upcoming meeting.

“When the term of the current House has ended there should be direct elections. Office-bearers have distributed diet money among associations for the first time in four years. There is no explanation for this. The upcoming meeting should be canceled,” Sharma added.

While supporting Sharma’s claim former District Sports Officer (DSO) KS Bharti said, “Only one annual meeting of the general House has been called during the past four years. Even executive committee meetings were convened through WhatsApp. The House or a committee should take a call on elections instead of current office-bearers.”

“The UT Sports Council is becoming a mute spectator. If any association does not conduct tournaments, they should go after it. However, in case of the COA, the UT Sports Council has just closed its eyes. There has to be equal treatment for all. The council should ask COA office-bearers what they did during all these four years before sending its observers for elections,” said Sharma while demanding an inquiry into the matter.
