Exit polls give TRS an edge in GHMC polls

Hyderabad, Dec 3 (UNI) The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) holds the edge in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)elections, even as its tally will be less than what it scored in the 2016 elections, according to PEOPLES PULSE, a Hyderabad based political research organization said in its Exit poll survey report release here on Thursday.
According to the election authorities, the polling percentage in 150 wards of GHMC elections held on Dec 1, was 46.55 per cent , the highest polling percentage recorded since the formation of Greater Hyderabad in 2007.
Out of 74,67,256 enrolled voters, 34,50,331 voters only cast their vote including 15,90,219 women , the authorities said.
The anxiously-awaited counting of votes polled in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will be taken up on Friday.
According to PEOPLES PULSE Exit poll, TRS would get 68-78 seats, BJP would get 25-35 seats while the MIM would figure in the 38-42 band and the Congress would get 1-5 seats in the 150-member Corporation.
The margin of error could be plus or minus three percent.
The survey revealed that the TRS leads the BJP by six percent of the vote share.
The TRS would get 38 percent of the vote share and the BJP would get 32 percent while the MIM and the Congress would get 13 and 12 percent respectively.
The issues that dominated the elections are Housing (28%), Unemployment (21%), Flood Relief (16%), Traffic (12%), Roads (10%), Sanitation (9%) and Other Issues (4%), the survey said.
In several divisions there are multi cornered contests which suggests that excitement would run high till the final votes in the respective divisions are counted.
Further due to these multi cornered contests have turned to the advantage of the TRS while the MIM limited itself to 51 wards and due to this the Muslim vote consolidated behind the TRS in the remaining 99 wards.
The Congress in Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency has performed well but this has turned to the advantage of the ruling party as the anti-government vote split among the parties, the survey report said.
MIM would register the best strike rate among all the parties that are in the fray.
The BJP would be the single largest gainer in these elections both in terms of vote share and seat share.
The party expected considerable consolidation of Hindu votes because of their high voltage campaign. This has not happened. However, there is a silent vote among sections of the people that has favoured the BJP. If this silent vote is substantial then the BJP seat share may go up.
The features that worked against the ruling party is the negative sentiment that the sitting corporators are suffering from, the mess in flood relief, not fulfilling election promises, among others.
The TRS poll management was the most intense where it covered all the bases.
The TDP and the Left parties being in the race are only nominal and they would not make any impact in the outcome of the divisions they are contesting.
The elections are a warning signal to both the ruling TRS and the main opposition party, the Congress. The warning is that a new force, the BJP, has begun to emerge.
Both parties may stand forewarned that ignoring this signal would be to their peril, the report added.
