Swedish consultancy Mediavision said that in the past twelve months, Nordic households have signed up for almost 3 million more streaming subscriptions, reaching 13.6 million altogether in the region. The primary cause of growth is stacking and most new subscriptions were for global, US streaming services, it said,
Nearly half of the extra subscriptions are for Netflix and Disney+. Almost 1.2 million Nordic households have now signed up for Disney+, bringing household penetration to 10 percent. Disney+'s rapid growth has outperformed every other competitor so far and the service immediately enters the Nordic top five list alongside Netflix, Viaplay, HBO Nordic and C More.
Nordic streaming providers have also grown substantially, with approximately 1.5 million added subscriptions collectively, reaching 5.6 million altogether. Each Nordic country has at least one local streaming service. The biggest regional company is Viaplay, which is available in all four Nordic countries. Among the strictly domestic services, TV2 Play in Denmark is the largest, followed by TV2 Sumo in Norway.
Nordic households have also increased their spending on streaming, reaching approximately EUR 19 per month for an average of 2.1 services in autumn 2020. This is a rise in spending of about 10 percent in one year.
