Punjab CM Amarinder Singh to meet Amit Shah before farmer talks

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh
CHANDIGARH: Prior to the scheduled meeting of representatives of farm groups and central ministers on Thursday, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh is scheduled to meet Union home minister Amit Shah in the morning. Farmers from Punjab and other states are holding massive protests at Delhi borders against the Centre’s farm laws.
Amarinder had already offered to extend support to the negotiations and to “mediate in the collective interest of all”. Sources confirmed that Amarinder, who had earlier announced that he would approach PM Narendra Modi and Shah on the issue, was scheduled to meet Shah.
The Congress government in Punjab has been sympathetic towards the demands of the farmers and wants the Centre should ensure that the MSP regime is not brought to an end.
Amarinder is likely to convey the sentiments of the farming community in the state, especially those with small land holdings, who fear that they would be left at the mercy of private players under the new farm laws.
