Coast Guard rescues 3 persons from an island in Gulf of Mannar

Chennai, Dec 3 (UNI) In a swift and daring operation, the
Indian Coast guard (ICG), overcoming adverse weather
conditions due to Cyclone 'Burevi', rescued three people
stranded in an island in Gulf of Mannar on Thursday.
A defence release here said they were rescued by the
Coast Guard Hovercraft based at Mandapam.
At about 1000 hrs, a distress call was received from
the Ramanathapuram District Collector that three people
were stranded at Manalli Tivu Island.
The rescue operation was undertaken in the challenging
weather conditions caused by Cyclone Burevi.
Strong winds, continuous rains and low visibility were
posed serious challenges for the crew to locate the boat
and undertake the operation.
However, the Hovercraft persisted with the search in
and around the island and after lot of persistence, it
was able to locate the boat and subsequently rescued
the distressed crew.
The trio had ventured into the sea on December one
and due to an engine problem, they could not start the
boat and were stranded at the Island for the last three
days.
All the three stranded people were provided with warm
clothes, first aid, enough fluids and refreshments.
They were brought to Coast Guard Station, Mandapam,
and were handed over to State Officials at 1230 hrs.
