Nokia-powered education facility Forge Academy has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory in Johannesburg, Engineering News reported. It is based at The Gantry in Fourways and aims to equip students with theoretical, laboratory and on-the-job training for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and global digital economy. Forge Academy, in conjunction with Nokia's 4IR experts and Finnish education specialists, has designed a programme for South African youths modelled on Finnish principles and equipped with Nokia smart technology.
The incubation hub is working closely with the Finnish Embassy, Nokia and other companies to provide an enabling space for 4IR technology-reliant start-up businesses, wherein they can obtain special funding, laboratory time, Wi-Fi, think tanks, smart technologies, assistance in product certification and the expertise. Nokia is sponsoring 30 students for a year-long education for a 4IR certified diploma. They will then start their own businesses, continue their studies at university sponsored by Nokia or other companies, or join a company where their skills will be needed.
Forge Academy will also offer an array of short courses, including the Basics of Computing and Basics of Coding, which is targeted at children, to paying students.
