A Hackathon is a design sprint-like event, in which computer programmers and others are involved in software development. Also, graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, domain experts and others collaborate intensively on software projects. The goal of a hackathon is to create functioning softwares or hardwares by the end of the event.

Hackathons tend to have a specific focus, which can include the programming language used, the operating system, an application, an application programming interface  (API), or the subject and a group of the programmers.

The participants work in small groups and encourage creative thinking. This leads to the evolution of innovative new concepts, ideas, and prototypes.
