Samsung will be the lone name missing from the list of Android smartphone makers who have all pledged to use the latest silicon from Qualcomm, the 888 5G mobile platform, in smartphones next year.
Other big names like ASUS, Lenovo, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE will all put out models using this SoC, according to Qualcomm officials at a Q and A on Wednesday.
The 888 is being built by Samsung using its 5nm technology, with Qualcomm having gone to the South Korean giant instead of its regular fab, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
In response to a query about Samsung's absence, Qualcomm senior vice-president and general manager for mobile, compute, and infrastructure Alex Katouzian said one should not read too much into it.
The Snapdragon 888 includes a third generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System, and supports mmWave and sub-6 across all major bands worldwide.
It also supports 5G carrier aggregation, global multi-SIM, standalone, non-stand alone, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.
The new chip was announced at Qualcomm's annual tech summit which was held online this year due to the pandemic.
