CHANDIGARH: Charkhi Dadri MLA Sombir Sangwan, who had defeated ace woman wrestler Babita Phogat in the 2019 state assembly elections, on Tuesday announced to withdraw his support to the Manohar Lal Khattar led BJP-JJP government in Haryana. In a letter to the Haryana legislative assembly speaker, Sangwan said the government’s “anti-farmers” policies were the reason behind his decision to withdraw support.
On Monday, Sangwan had resigned from the post of chairman, Haryana Livestock Development Board, while extending his support to the farmers gathered at Delhi’s borders protesting the Centre’s new farm laws, He was among the four independent MLAs who had announced support to the Khattar government after the 2019 assembly polls and was rewarded with the post of Haryana Livestock Development Board chairman. He had also actively sought votes for BJP in the Baroda bypoll.
Sangwan’s withdrawal of support, however, would not have any immediate impact on the coalition government, which is already in majority. While BJP has 40 MLAs, its alliance partner JJP has10 in the 90-member Haryana assembly. Besides, some other independent MLAs are also supporting the state government.
