India, Russia agree to work closely together in UNSC

India, Russia agree to work closely together in UNSC

New Delhi, Dec 2 (UNI) India and Russia on Wednesday decided to work closely together during upcoming New Delhi’s tenure in United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member.

India’s tenure is scheduled to begin from January next year.

On UNSC, the two sides held their consultation and held wide ranging discussions on its agenda and recent developments.

Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation on counter terrorism at multilateral platforms, the ministry of external affairs said in a statement here on Wednesday.

The Indian delegation briefed Russia on its priorities during its upcoming UNSC tenure and they decided to work closely together, given the common challenges faced and in keeping with their long standing Special and Strategic Privileged Partnership.

The Indian side was led by Secretary (West) in the external affairs ministry while the Russian side was represented by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Vasilyevich Vershinin.

It is pertinent to mention here that India has been pressing for reforms in United Nations since long.

The UN Security Council reform has been on the agenda for more than a decade.

But member nations haven’t been able to agree on how big the council should become and whether other nations should have veto powers.

As a result, the Security Council continues to reflect the global power structure of 1945, when the Second World War victors – the P-5 – the USA, UK, France, Russia and China – acquired their privileged status.
