YAMUNANAGAR: An amount of about Rs 40 lakh was reported missing from the strong room of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) branch office at Sector 17 of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), Jagadhri, in the Yamunanagar district.
A case was registered against unknown persons under sections 381 (theft by clerk or servant), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with the Jagadhri police station following the complaint of LIC branch manager Anil Kumar Goyal on Tuesday.
In his police complaint, Anil stated, “A total of Rs 42,62,716 had been kept in the strong room of the LIC branch of HUDA, Jagadhri at about 5.30pm on November 27. The branch office of LIC remained closed for three days due to government holidays from November 28 to November 30. The office opened on December 1. When the cash was checked in the safe on Tuesday at about 11am, Rs 40,62,470 was found missing. The involvement of the office employees cannot be ruled out. An amount of about Rs 2 lakh was left.”
Jagadhri police station house officer (SHO) inspector Ajit Kumar said, "The employees of the LIC branch are being questioned. The doors and locks of the office and strong room were not damaged. It appears to be the handiwork of an insider. The CCTV camera footage is being analysed and the digital video recorder (DVR) has been taken into custody.”
The keys of the strong room were with four employees, the SHO said.
