Sales of connected TVs and other media streaming devices are expected to grow 7 percent this year, after a strong third quarter, Strategy Analytics forecasts. In Q3, the market grew 19 percent year-on-year to 81.3 million units, representing a strong recovery after two quarters of flat to lower sales. Smart TVs and media streamers each performed well, while sales of TV games consoles also began to increase again after several quarters of decline, the market researcher said.
Samsung sold 11.8 million smart TVs worldwide in Q3, the best ever quarter by Samsung or any other vendor. As a result, there are more than 155 million Tizen OS smart TVs from Samsung in use around the world, an increase of 23 percent in the past year.
Samsung has been focusing on monetising the large installed base with the launch of new content and advertising services. According to Strategy Analytics, Tizen OS is the largest TV streaming platform worldwide, accounting for 12.5 percent of connected TV devices in use. The next largest platforms are LG’s WebOS, Sony PlayStation, Roku TV OS, Amazon’s Fire TV OS and Google’s Android TV.
In total, nearly 1.3 billion connected TV devices will be in use worldwide by the end of 2020, the market researcher estimates.
