The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are to spend a "quiet" Christmas at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The couple made the decision after considering “all the appropriate advice,” a spokesman said.

They are said to feel “fortunate” that they usually spend Christmas with their family but are content to spend it alone this year, understanding that their relatives will have “competing demands” over the festive period.

“Like everyone they hope things will get back to normal in 2021,” a source said.

It will be the first time the Queen has not spent Christmas at Sandringham, her Norfolk estate, for 37 years.

The monarch, 94, and Duke of Edinburgh, 99, would have been limited to spending the festive period with two other households, just like the rest of the nation.

Royal sources had confirmed that factors such as the monarch’s age and relative frailty would be taken into account when they considered their options.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will spend Christmas Day at Highgrove but expect to have a chance to see the Queen and the Duke at Windsor at some point during the week.

The Duchess will also see her own family over the festive period, sources confirmed.

The restrictions mean that they might only be able to see the Queen outside, in a socially distanced capacity.
