T-Mobile Netherlands has completed the acquisition of MVNO Simpel. With a combined total of 6.7 million mobile customers, this makes it the largest mobile operator in the country. Nevertheless, T-Mobile said it would continue to play the role of challenger on the Dutch market.
Telecompaper's research confirms the company is now the largest mobile operator in the country, after adding the 1 million customers from Simpel. Excluding wholesale customers, KPN has 6.4 million mobile customers, and Vodafone 5.2 million, according to the Telecompaper Dutch Mobile Operators report.
Simpel customers will see no change after the takeover, as the MVNO already used T-Mobile's network. T-Mobile said its network handles over 50 percent of all mobile data traffic in the Netherlands.
According to CEO Soren Abildgaard, T-Mobile will continue to fill the role of challenger on the Dutch market, despite taking the lead in customer numbers. In the fixed internet market T-Mobile remains much smaller than the other players. The company is "definitely not where it wants to be" in the fixed market and plans to "shake up" this market in future, the CEO said.
