Conspiracy to grab land of farmers: Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav today charged Centre with a "conspiracy" to grab their land in the guise of farm laws. "People like us involved in farming clearly understand the conspiracy of grabbing lands of farmers under the guise of farm laws by giving 'jumla' (false promise) of doubling the income. We are struggling as usual with our farmer brothers, so that the structure protecting the MSP, market and agriculture remains intact. BJP is over now!" Yadav said in a tweet in Hindi.

Farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, are holding protests at the Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders of the national capital against the Centre's new agri-marketing laws. Expressing his support to farmers, Yadav had earlier said that if farmers were left to the market and the big players, then they would never benefit. The Centre has invited agitating farmer unions for talks at 3 PM.

What PM Modi said on farmers protests

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said those who have a history of deceit were playing tricks again on farmers. "The farmers are being deceived on these historic agriculture reform laws by the same people who have misled them for decades," he said. He strongly defended the farm laws which deregulate the sale of crops but have also triggered apprehensions that the minimum support price (MSP) system is being dismantled. He reiterated that farmers who wanted to follow the old system of trading referring to the mandis' where they can get the MSP are still free to do so. But, he said, the three laws gave them new options to sell for more. The Prime Minister said whenever new laws are enacted questions are bound to be asked but presently a new trend is being seen in the country — the protests are based on creating doubts through misinformation.
