Movistar (Telefonica) and Claro (America Movil) ended the third quarter practically tied at the top of Peru’s ranking of mobile operators for the first time ever, with a market share of 29.8 percent and 29.6 percent respectively, according to the latest update released by telecom regulator Osiptel. Movistar’s participation has fallen 5.5 percent year on year (and around 25 percentage points since 2014) while Claro’s has risen 0.8 percent year on year.
The unprecedented event is due mainly to the rise of Entel to 22.5 percent of the local mobile market at the end of September, up 3.3 percent year on year, and Bitel to 17.8 percent, up 1.2 percent. Peruvian MVNOs Flash Mobile and Cuy Movil, meanwhile, registered a market share of 0.3 percent at the end of September, said the watchdog.
