German govt designs standards to drive AI strategy

Tuesday 1 December 2020 | 09:29 CET | News

The German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs has designed a roadmap for norms and standards in Artificial Intelligence together with the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN) and the Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (DKE). Experts from business, science, the public sector and civil society participated to developing the roadmap. The German government has introduced the AI roadmap to the public during the Digital Summit.

The government has built the basis for implementing the AI strategy. Norms and standards ensure collaboration and trust in AI systems and pave the way for "AI - Made in Germany", Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier said. The implementation of the recommendations for action on AI should contribute to reinforcing the German economy and science internationally and create the conditions to use the technology in future.

The roadmap provides an overview of the status quo, requirements and challenges in AI, and the need for norms in seven key areas including ethics, quality, certification, IT security in AI systems, industrial automation, mobility and logistics, and AI in medicine. The experts involved identified five central recommendations for action to build trust in AI. These include data reference models for the interoperability of AI systems, a basic AI safety standard, initial critical check to design AI systems, national implementation of the programme "Trusted AI" for upgrading European quality infrastructure, and analysing use cases for standardisation.
