Hybrid vs. Foam Mattresses

Most mattresses that you order online are made of various densities of memory foam, and they arrive at your door vacuum sealed, rolled up in a box. Some are only made of three to five layers of memory foam, but our favorite models are usually "hybrid" mattresses. Hybrids also have hundreds of individually wrapped springs sandwiched between their layers of foam. This gives them some of the better qualities of traditional box-spring mattresses and the newer memory foam models. They tend to be more supportive, and the coils help with airflow, so they tend to sleep cooler at night.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is our favorite mattress. Its plush top has the perfect amount of cushioning, and it's just all-around comfortable—and worth the extra cost if you can afford it. For $200 off the queen size, use the code CYBERMONDAY200 at checkout. If you order a size smaller than queen, use the code CYBERMONDAY150 for $150 off orders of $1,250 or more, or use CYBERMONDAY100 for a discount on a $600 order. It comes with two free pillows.

★ Top Bargain—Allswell Luxe Hybrid Mattress for $484 ($161 off)

Allswell (made by Walmart) has nice mattresses for the price. The Luxe is similar to the Standard Hybrid (which is not currently on sale, but still only $375), with three extra layers of foam and a plusher top cover. Both are hybrids with a full bed of individually wrapped springs inside it to prevent motion transfer.

We've also tried and loved the Allswell Supreme Hybrid Mattress ($738, $246 off), which is on sale for around $750. It offers a plushness you don’t find until you start to hit the $1,200 mattresses. Use code TURKEY25 to get this discount.

This is another favorite of ours. It's not quite as luxurious as the Helix, but it's a few hundred dollars less. Reviews editor Jeffrey Van Camp kept coming back to this mattress during testing because its got that soft-yet-firm feel, with just enough pressure-relief.

Almost all the other mattresses we've tried and recommend are also on sale. A few of these include additional accessories, like pillows, sheets, and a mattress protector.

  • Brooklyn Bedding Hybrid for $699 ($300 off): This is a great option if you like a firm mattress—Reviews Editor Jeffrey Van Camp slept on the firmest option, and said he’d go for a medium next time. But nonetheless it’s a solid mattress that’s held up.

  • Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress for $2,595 ($500 off): This smart mattress is expensive, deal or not, but it's nice. It changes its temperature to match your body each night, and it tracks your sleep. Jeffrey has been testing it, and said the top is not super soft at first—it can feel a little like there's a thin sliver of plastic in there, but he got used to it quickly and likes the temperature regulation and sleep tracking features so far.

  • Layla Two-Sided Foam Mattress for $899 ($150 off): Are you unsure if you prefer a softer or firmer mattresses? You get both with this Layla. Plus, this deal gets you two free pillows, microfiber sheets, and a mattress protector.

  • Tuft & Needle Mint Foam Mattress for $796 ($199 off): This mattress is somehow pressure-relieving and supportive, despite its top layer of foam that lets you sink right in a little. It keeps cool too.

  • Tulo Foam Mattress for $343 ($356 off): This is a great sale on a mattress that's already about half the price of the competition at its normal price. You can choose your level of firmness with this model.

  • Birch Natural Mattress for $1,299 ($200 off): Use code CYBERSALE200 for this deal on a more eco-friendly option. Its made by Helix (the company that makes our favorite mattress), and it's comfortable and bouncy, but it doesn't stay quite as cool. You'll also get two pillows with this deal.

  • DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress for $899 ($200 off): This is a good price on another luxurious mattress that made our honorable mentions list. It has a thick pillow top similar to our favorite, the Helix Midnight Luxe. You'll also get two pillows, a sheet set, and mattress protector.

  • Nectar Sleep Foam Mattress for $800 ($398 off): This is a good option for side-sleepers, as it has a classic memory foam hug to it. You'll also get two pillows, a sheet set, and mattress protector with this deal.

  • Purple Mattress for $1,049 ($100 off): The Purple is one of our honorable mentions. It's not quite as comfy as a hybrid mattress, but it has a unique Jell-O-ey cool feel. You can save $200 if you also get two pillows, sheets, and a mattress protector, but all three are still pricey at another $316.

  • Casper Hybrid Mattress for $1,036 ($259 off): Still not sure what mattress is for you? This is probably a safe bet. Casper was the company that helped kick off the bed-in-a-box trend years back, and its experience shows. We haven't tested the 2020 tweak to this mattress, but the 2019 model is one of our favorites. It's comfy, with individually wrapped coils giving it spring, support, and airflow. Be sure to select the Hybrid option on the buy page. The original all-foam model—which pops up on the page first—is not as comfortable.

  • Leesa Original Mattress for $849 ($150 off): We prefer the Leesa Hybrid to this all-foam option, but it's a comfortable, more affordable model. We think it's comfier than the original Casper.
