Australia beat India in 2nd ODI: Jasprit Bumrah is a key component of India’s team being the spearhead of the bowling department. He can be termed as one of the four pillars of current Indian generation. But the 26-year-old has struggled to make an impact against Australia as the hosts have taken unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
The right-arm fast, who is known for his bowling prowess especially in the death overs, never troubled the Men Down Under in both the ODIs that has been played so far.
In the first ODI, he conceded 73 runs, third most expensive of the night, and managed to get just one wicket in Aaron Finch, while in the second ODI, the pacer continued his dismal show and gave away 79 runs in his allotted 10 overs while managing to pick just a wicket. Notably, Bumrah was once again the costliest bowler for India in 2nd ODI, which India lost by 51 runs.
Bumrah’s poor performance is something which is unexpected by everyone especially after his superb show in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). He was one of the best performers of the season and was crucial to Mumbai Indians’ (MI) title win. In 15 games he chipped 27 wickets.
Considered as one of the best fast bowlers of his generation, Bumrah has failed to replicate the same performance in ODIs.
Ind vs Aus: Jasprit Bumrah’s performance in post-2019 World Cup
Since the ICC World Cup in 2019, India has played three ODI series. The first came in August 2019 against West Indies, the others came in 2020 against Australia and New Zealand respectively.
Bumrah was rested in the Windies tour. He made his return to the side in January when Australia came to India for three-ODI series. And it was the last time he took a wicket – in the 2nd ODI in Rajkot
In 2020 he has bowled 56 over – before November 27, 2020 and has failed to make an impact with the leather.
Ind vs Aus: How has his out-of-form affected Virat Kohli and team against Australia?
India were playing its first international competition in nearly nine months. Bowling first, the teams morale was dependent of Bumrah’s shoulders. An early wicket in the first powerplay would have given the team a needed boost. However, he struggled to find the right bounce which fans saw in UAE during the IPL.
However, it was his lack of intent in the death overs which cost India dearly. Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell’s blitzkrieg in the end-overs was the main reason that Australia posted a mammoth total of 374 in the first ODI and 389 in the second ODI.
Aus beat India in 2nd ODI: KL Rahul defends, ‘Indian bowlers & especially Jasprit Bumrah’ flop show
The Indian bowlers, who did exceedingly well in the IPL before landing in Australia, have bled runs in the first two ODIs, letting the hosts run away with a decisive 2-0 series lead in the three-ODI series.
The ever-reliable Bumrah and the fiery Mohammed Shami have been made to look quite ordinary by the home team batsmen, who have scored at will.
“I would not agree when you say they are struggling. It’s different conditions, different format. It’s learning for us to sit back and think of how to do better when playing on such good batting wickets,” Rahul said at the post-match press conference after India lost the second ODI by 51 runs.
Asked if it’s just a bad phase for Bumrah, who struggled even in New Zealand earlier this year, Rahul said the speedster will come back strongly.
“We all know Jasprit is very fiery and competitive on the field. He means a lot to this set up, we know the value of Jasprit. It’s about time that a champion player comes back and delivers and gets wickets for us.
“In New Zealand and Australia, the wickets are too good to bat, you will see that bowlers will not get wickets, that’s acceptable.”
