GOACAN has welcomed the Quality Control Order (QCO) making BIS certified helmets compulsory for two wheeler riders. “QCO fulfills a long standing demand at meetings of the State Road Safety Council, State Consumer Protection Council and the State level Committee on Standardization & Quality Systems,” said GOACAN.
The ministry of road transport and highways on November 26, issued the, Helmet for riders of two Wheelers Motor Vehicles (Quality Control ) Order, 2020. Protective helmets have been included under compulsory BIS certification post the publication of the QCO.
The order will have a direct impact on the sale of fake and duplicate helmets being sold in the state. Many two wheeler riders were injured and killed due to the use of non-ISI helmets, said GOACAN.
The consumer outfit had campaigned for the manufacture of non ISI helmets to be stopped permanently. This QCO will make enforcement raids possible by the authorities. Presently seizures of fake helmets are being carried out only by the inspectors of the Legal Metrology department.
